Old Sibly's building.

DRAMATIC CHANGE AHEAD FOR FORMER SIBLEY’S: One of the biggest building overhauls in downtown Syracuse’s ongoing revival has shifted into high gear. Workers have ripped off the 1980s-style pinkish facade from the former Sibley’s Department Store at the corner of South Salina and West Jefferson streets. The work is the start of a $37 million transformation of the building into City Center, a mix of commercial and retail space and apartments. When the work is completed in early 2023, the building will have a dramatically different look. (Dennis Nett photo)

Woman sentenced for “horrific” murder of 93-year-old: Victoria Afet lurked in a stairwell at Syracuse’s notorious Skyline Apartments as 93-year-old Connie Tuori returned to her 12th floor apartment. Afet rushed in to catch the door before it closed, disappearing in to the elderly woman’s home, according to security footage on Feb. 26, 2021. What happened next may have been more horrific than previously known. Afet committed “unspeakable” acts of brutality, County Court Judge Matthew Doran said Thursday, when Afet was sentenced for Tuori’s murder.

Joe Cecile’s moment: Can a police insider rally the force and continue reforms? Three years ago, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh brought in an outsider, Kenton Buckner, to run the Syracuse Police Department. Now, to replace Buckner, he’s turned to 61-year-old Joe Cecile. With more than three decades as a Syracuse cop and with deep family ties to the department, Cecile is a consummate insider. A cop’s cop. Some observers wonder whether that could mark a return to old school leadership, with less pressure to improve and to hold police accountable for bad behavior. Cecile says no, and said he’ll make it clear early on that he won’t go soft on discipline.

How Walt Price, now 91, concocted crazy idea that became Mountain Goat Run: Forty-four years ago, Walt Price had the audacious idea of organizing a 17-mile run that would encompass four city parks, all perched atop Syracuse’s hilliest neighborhoods. That informal run, dubbed the “Super Goat,” would blossom the next year into the mercifully scaled-back 10-mile Mountain Goat Run, a race that now routinely attracts 3,000 runners and has become a mainstay on the local running calendar. Price, who recently turned 91, plans to walk the beginning of the 2022 Goat on Sunday morning.

Upstate Medical gives nurses another pay raise: Upstate Medical University is giving nurses another pay raise to make itself more competitive amid the severe national nursing shortage. The pay raises a sign of the fierce competition among hospitals in Syracuse and nationwide for the limited supply of nurses. Here’s how much more the nurses will be making.
