Penny Lancaster reveals she is thankful for her husband Sir Rod Stewart’s support during menopause

Penny Lancaster has revealed she is thankful for her husband Sir Rod Stewart’s support as she deals with the menopause.

The 51-year-old Loose Women panellist opened up about how she is determined to break down the taboo surrounding the menopause after recently struggling with severe symptoms.

She went on to praise her music legend spouse, 77, for making men more aware of the issue by backing the Menopause Mandate campaign – which has been championed by Penny and TV presenters Davina McCall and Mariella Frostrup.

penny told The Daily Telegraph: ‘First of all he had empathy towards me and how I was suffering from it. We’ve always been good at communicating with one another and explaining how we feel, so he got to understand.

‘Then he wanted to encourage men to sit up and take note. He’s going: ‘This isn’t just a women’s problem. We need to recognize it.’ It affects husbands, partners, children.’

The star, who married Rod in 2007, recalled how she suffered ‘major meltdowns’ as the symptoms began to impact on her.

Penny – who shares sons Alastair, 16, and Aiden, 11, with Rod – said: ‘I had a couple of major meltdowns. I couldn’t justify my feelings and emotions, couldn’t pull myself out of it and would collapse into a ball of tears of frustration and scream, which is not like me at all.’

The model started to experience hot flushes during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic and feared the worst initially.

Penny explained: ‘We were all terrified that anyone who gets (COVID) could die, and the fear of that exacerbated my feelings of anxiety.’

She started receiving treatment in the form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) but fears the current shortage in the UK will have a bad impact on her.

Penny said: ‘I needed a new prescription and they told me, ‘I’m sorry but we’re out of stock.

The shortage is expected to be solved by June but that is of little comfort to Penny who fears she’ll take it out on her family.

She said: ‘I’m warning my husband and children I might take a reverse turn. June is a long time for a lot of women to have to wait to feel better.’

Rod previously discussed Penny’s menopause journey on Loose Women and admitted he found the experience ‘frightening’ as he witnessed Penny change ‘from the person I married’.

He said: ‘I googled menopause so much when she was going through it, she was in a fragile situation, I just had to listen and learn and get ready for saucepans being thrown through the kitchen.

‘It was frightening, it wasn’t the person I married, she explained it through the tears and we talked it through.’

It comes after Rod and Penny appeared to be as loved-up as ever as they posed for snaps on their sun-soaked getaway to France.

The musician and his model wife put on a smitten display as they cuddled up to each other and enjoyed an evening out at Annex Beach in Cannes on Monday.

Rod was seen lovingly putting an arm around Penny as they went for a stroll, with the rocker sporting his beloved Celtic FC colours.

In one sweet snap, shared on their respective Instagram pages, the Maggie May hitmaker cut a smart figure in white trousers and a cream roll-neck knit sweater.

He completed his dapper attire with a pair of white suit shoes while he styled his silver locks in his signature spiked style.

Meanwhile, Penny was the picture of elegance in a leopard-print satin gown with lace edging and a white cardigan.

She sported a pair of beige studded sandals and accessorized her glamorous look with a long silver necklace.

The photographer styled her golden tresses in loose waves across her shoulders while she let her natural good looks shine through with a light dusting of make-up.

Alongside the snap, Rod gushed: ‘Gorgeous then and still gorgeous now @annexbeachcannes.’

And Loose Woman star Penny shared the picture to her own Instagram and penned: ‘Love is in the air.’
