Explanation on Draymond’s Flagrant 2

Kane Fitzgerald on why Draymond Green was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul instead of a Flagrant 1 (per the pool report):

“Well, there’s a couple things. The first part was the wind up and significant contact to the face, and then the pull down from the jersey grab and throw down to the floor to an airborne vulnerable player makes that unnecessary and excessive. That’s what led to the flagrant foul penalty two.”

Warriors pull out to 117-116 win in Game 1

Just a monster of a series opening win for the Warriors on the road. Down without an ejected Draymond Green in the second half.

Jordan Poole had 31 points off the bench. Klay Thompson hit go-ahead 3. Steph Curry had 24. Game 2 on Tuesday with Draymond back.

Four-guard look for the Warriors down the stretch

Warriors with four guards and a wing on the floor down the stretch: Curry, Payton, Poole, Klay, Wiggins.

Needed GP2 back on the floor for Morant, couldn’t take Poole off the floor because of his offense. But now you have Klay/Wiggins boxing out Clarke/Jackson.

All even at 114

Kerr pulls Gary Payton II and Ja Morant immediately makes him pay with two driving layups, plus the foul on the latter.

GP2 checks back in and makes a reverse layup to even the score at 114.

Morant connecting from deep

Ja Morant has made four three-pointers (nine attempts). The last time he made four in a game was a March 3 loss at Boston. He was 4-for-12.

The game before that, Feb. 28 against San Antonio, he was 4-for-4. Morant was 4-for-20 from 3 in the first round against Minnesota

here you eat curry

That’s a plus-5 for the Warriors in 4:30 to open the fourth quarter with Steph Curry resting and Draymond Green in the locker room.

If Warriors take this road Game 1, that’s probably the biggest stretch. Curry coming in after the timeout.

Golden State steps up with Curry resting

Stephen Curry has played 30 minutes. The Warriors are buying valuable minutes by expanding the lead with Curry sitting.

He should be fresh for the stretch.

Some themes to watch down the stretch

The Warriors desperately needed that third quarter after Draymond Green’s ejection with 1:18 remaining in the second quarter. They won it by seven.

Some themes to watch heading into what could be a thrilling final period:

Golden State really attacked Ja Morant on screens in the third. Let’s see if they continue it in the fourth. On the other end, the Warriors are going way under ball screens for Morant. Can he make them pay with his jumper? Or will he use that space to create momentum and get into the lane?

He’s got some hot shooters to facilitate for, including Jaren Jackson Jr., who’s got 28 points and has drained five 3s.

Warriors lead 91-90 at the end of the third

That’s a plus-7 third quarter for the Warriors without Draymond Green.

Have big Kevon Looney minutes on the back end of the defense and then a three-guard bombs away offensive approach. Four combined 3s from Curry/Poole that quarter. They’re up one heading to fourth.

Warriors laying off Ja from 3

Warriors are giving Ja Morant any 3 he wants. Laying way off him.

He’s already taken a playoff-high seven. Made three. But Warriors aren’t backing off the strategy.

Warriors head back to where it started

The dynasty began in Memphis. That’s where the Warriors, mining for their championship greatness, discovered their worth.

They were down, 2-1, in the Western Conference semifinals. But they’d been pounded, their potent ground offense to a halt, topping out at 90 points in Games 2 and 3. Their beautiful game was getting choked out by the Grizzlies’ gritty grind. The Warriors’ rain of 3-pointers dried up. The surrounding doubt was seeing in.

At a barbecue joint on Beale Street, the famous Blues City Cafe is where they recalibrated.
