BMW has taken the curtains of the all-new seventh-generation 7-Series luxury saloon and it is a mixed bag. This is BMW’s most technologically advanced car yet but also has the most questionable face. Keeping aside that debate, the most important model in the 7-Series line-up is the all-new BMW i7.

The first-ever all-electric luxury saloon from Bimmer is a revelation. It packs the same battery and powertrain tech from the BMW iX but has been retuned and refined for a more luxurious experience. But it is the interior that screams of opulence. It is a modern-day art installation with glass, wood, leather, cashmere, and gigantic screens.

BMW offers a suite of comfort and technology features to spoil you, and will even provide a 31.3-inch theater display for your cinematic needs. The design might take a while to get used to, but it is surely a move in the right direction.

That questionable face aside, the 2023 BMW i7 opens up a new book for all-electric luxury spaceships.

BMW i7 Packs A 536 Hp Electric Powertrain

BMW i7 uses a similar powertrain setup as seen in the BMW iX, but with more power and smaller-sized batteries. It uses a 101.7-kWh battery pack coupled to a dual-motor layout to churn out 536 hp and 549 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. The i7 is capable of doing 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and has a slated top speed of 149 mph.

A Cozy Ride With A Dynamic Underpinning

While the 2023 BMW i7 is deemed to be a luxury yacht, it still possesses a few sporty characteristics. It shares the platform with the gas-powered 7-Series but with notable mods. Ella it packs a two-axle air suspension setup with automatic self-leveling and electronically controlled dampers on all fours.

Toggling between the various drive modes can change the ride height from 0.4 inches to 0.8 inches. Also, BMW’s version of the rear-steering wheel called Integral Active Steering adds more agility to this long luxury saloon. It can turn the rear wheels by up to 3.5 degrees in the opposite direction at low speeds and the same direction at high speeds.

2023 BMW i7: Driving Range And Charging Tech

BMW claims that the i7 is good for a driving range of around 300 miles on a charge. On the charging from, BMW states that the software has been developed further for more cooling of the battery pack, which in turn translates to lesser charging times.

The US-spec i7 will come with an 11-kW onboard charger that supports DC fast-charging up to 195 kW. Using this fast-charging tech, the i7 can charge up to 80 miles in just 10 minutes. BMW is also working with Electrify America to provide three years’ worth of free fast charging with every i7.

Questionable Exterior But Looks Elegant Nonetheless

The talking point of the 2023 i7 is its design language. We understand that a unique perspective is required to distinguish the new wave of EVs coming in, but hasn’t BMW taken it too far already?! First, it was the M3 and M4then the BMW XM Concept, and now the all-new 7-Series. What is up with the face?!

It might be a boon in a lot of practical ways, but the new i7 is not a looker. And the rear fascia isn’t any good either. The whole design looks rather unfinished and the lines don’t flow in to form a whole entity. But then again, the proportions are on point, and the design will eventually grow onto us.

The dimensions have been increased as compared to the outgoing 7-Series, and even the EV follows the good old long hood and stretched saloon layout. There are subtle blue inserts all around the body to remind us of the electrified internals, cos the design is identical to the gasoline-powered 7-Series.

Elegant Interior With Screens And More Screens

The interior is one of the best among modern luxury saloons out there, hands down! And unlike certain EVs that throw screens at your face, the i7’s dashboard is a lot more welcoming with a single curved slab that is driver-focused. It packs the instrument cluster and the infotainment screen in two 12.3-inch displays, running the latest iDrive 8 interface.

The dash is divided into two sections by an artistic layer of transparent polycarbonate structure that also doubles up as the ambient lighting strip. It looks gorgeous and also changes color based on the drive modes or moods. The upholstery is a mixture of leather, cashmere, and Alcantara. And there are loads and loads of storage spaces all around.

But the eye-popping feature is the optional Theater Screen rear entertainment system that adds in a gigantic 31.3-inch wide touchscreen display that swivels down the i7’s panoramic roof. It is the perfect theater experience on wheels. And all its controls are packed into a touch screen embedded into both the door panels. You can enjoy all the streaming apps thanks to the car’s inbuilt 5G connectivity feature.

2023 i7 Packs The Best Of Safety That BMW Offers

Adding to the i7’s technology suite is a wholesome suite of driver-assistive features. It includes the like of BMW’s Highway Assist which will be exclusive for North America at launch. It allows for hands-free driving and it is a small step forward into autonomy. Also the i7 packs in sensing tech from Mobileeye and has OTA upgrade capability for active safety and infotainment features.

The 2023 BMW i7 starts with an MSRP of $119,300 before the accessible federal tax credits of up to $7,500. It will be offered in a single trim – the xDrive60 and can be pre-ordered right away for a deposit of $1,500. The 2023 BMW 7-Series along with the i7 will start its deliveries from the fourth quarter of 2022.
