College Basketball Power Rankings 2022-2023

A wild, unpredictable college basketball season said farewell in a fitting fashion. While a 1-seed, Kansas, ultimately stood atop the mountain, the path to arrive in a somewhat anticipated place was anything but linear.

And now, appropriately, we ask a familiar question.

Who is next?

Ranking college basketball teams this early for next season is ripe with disclaimers. Recruiting classes are still coming together. Departures are being finalized. The transfer portal is merely getting started. (This is a simplified way of saying that much of what you’ll read below is likely.)

That won’t stop us from doing it, though.

CBB Power Rankings: Preseason 2022-2023

25. Iowa

  • National Champion Odds: +6600

The Hawkeyes’ best player, Keegan Murray, is almost certainly NBA-bound. That’s an issue. His twin brother of him, Chris Murray, could be possessed for a tremendous season, and Iowa is not without talent or depth. You could make a case for a handful of Big Ten teams here, but Iowa gets the nod for now.

24. Indiana

  • National Champion Odds: +6600

Keep an eye on Trayce Jackson-Davis. His decision to stay or leave is vital for Indiana moving forward. Regardless, the Hoosiers have a solid recruiting class and a mix of experience to go with it.

23. Texas

  • National Champion Odds: +3500

The youth movement is coming. Texas will welcome 5-star recruits Dillon Mitchell and Morris Artery next season, which is great news for head coach Chris Beard. There’s work to do here, but there’s a foundation to work with.

  • National Champion Odds: +3500

On the topic of talent infusions, enter Oregon. The Ducks are coming off an underwhelming year, but that is poised to change. Kel’el Ware and Dior Johnsonboth 5-star recruits, are immediate upgrades to a roster that has already some depth.

  • National Champion Odds: +4000

Jabari Smith and Walker Kessler are gone, and those holes will not be easy to fill. Still, Auburn returns some key contributors, and the Tigers flashed at times this past year.

20. UTC

  • National Champion Odds: +10000

This team can fight. We saw that in this year’s tournament when the Horned Frogs nearly surpassed Arizona. Mike Miles is gone to the NBA, but the roster is young and promising. This program is really on the rise.

  • National Champion Odds: +10000

Barring something unforeseen, Dayton will return all five starters next season. That’s terrific news for a team that won 24 games last season. One of those wins came against eventual national champion Kansas at the ESPN Events Invitational. Stay tuned.

  • National Champion Odds: +4000

Let’s start with the losses. Jaden Ivey and Trevion-Williams are likely gone, and they won’t be easy to replace. But mammoth center zach edey should be back, and that’s a huge piece, quite literally.

17. Illinois

  • National Champion Odds: +5000

Will Kofi Cockburn come back? The answer will significantly sway Illinois’ chances, especially given how good he is at the college level. If he returns, head coach Brad Underwood will have another shot at a huge year.

16.Texas Tech

  • National Champion Odds: +2500

new head coach Mark Adams proved to be up to the task this year, which should provide plenty of hope moving forward. While TTU doesn’t have a true star, there are plenty of capable players returning to a driven group.

15. Alabama

  • National Champion Odds: +2500

This team seemed capable of making a run not long ago, although the pieces never quite meshed. However, with a top-five recruiting class coming in, an injection of talent will likely provide the spark this team needs.

  • National Champion Odds: +5000

The team that gave the eventual national champion a scare will largely return. Creighton will bring back many key contributors, which is a scary thought. While it might not have the same “name” power as others on this list, Creighton could be an issue.

13. Tennessee

  • National Champion Odds: +3000

The Vols were a team many, including me, liked to make a deep run in the tournament. Unfortunately, that was not to be, and the loss of freshman Kennedy Chandler won’t help. But many others will return, and Tennessee is poised to make a push once more.

12. Michigan

  • National Champion Odds: +2500

It was a weird year, and that’s putting it mildly. Hunter Dickinson‘s decision to stay or go is big for head coach juwan howard. But Michigan has ample big men returning and some promising young players coming in.

11. Villanova

  • National Champion Odds: +1800

The run for a title came up short, but Villanova showed many it could compete. Colin Gillespie is finally gone, although the roster is still ripe with experience.

10. Baylor

  • National Champion Odds: +1800

Remember them? Not long ago, Baylor won the national championship. This year, the Bears fell considerably short despite being a 1-seed. That experience and the arrival of Keyon Georgea candidate to be the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, should see Baylor regain form.

9. Arizona

  • National Champion Odds: +1600

It seems likely that Benedict Mathurin is off to the NBA. If that is the case, and he might not be the only one, Arizona’s roster will need some replenishing. That decision is worth keeping an eye on, but the Wildcats will compete regardless.

8. Gonzaga

  • National Champion Odds: +1200

Drew Timme will test the NBA waters, although he could still return. Chet Holmgren, however, is almost certainly gone. Gonzaga still has experienced former blue-chip recruits on the roster, but a drop-off is possible.

  • National Champion Odds: +1200

The national champions will be formidable once again. Well, of course. While a No. 7 ranking might seem unfair for the champs, ochai agbaji (and others) are likely to move on. However, a monster recruiting class should help.

  • National Champion Odds: +1800

The Cougars nearly reached another Final Four, and they did so without Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark. Both players were lost to injury last season, and both should be back next year. That, coupled with other returning production, could spell another memorable run.

5.North Carolina

  • National Champion Odds: +1400

This one is very much to be determined. Armando Baccot and Caleb Love could return or head to the NBA. Still, this team has momentum after a runner-up finish in the tourney. They need to show it in the regular season now.

  • National Champion Odds: +1000

Losing most of a starting lineup that just reached the Final Four is typically an issue. However, new head coach jon scheyer will welcome four 5-star recruits as part of college basketball’s No. 1 recruiting class. This team will be very young but could be very fun.

  • National Champion Odds: +1000

The disappointment of an opening-round loss still lingers, but Kentucky is reloading and waiting. The status of oscar tshiebwe is one to follow, but new blood is coming. Casen Wallace and Chris Livingstoneboth ranked as top-10 players in the class, could be instant stars.

2. Arkansas

  • National Champion Odds: +1200

The Hogs are coming. Eric Musselman is on the verge of delivering one of the top recruiting classes in the country, led by guard Nick Smith. With five of the nation’s top 90 players bound for Arkansas, an already solid roster will be infused with more talent.
